Every morning, Joselin puts on her uniform, grabs her backpack, and walks to school.
Joselin is in second grade and is the oldest of three siblings. Like many older sisters, she already understands something about responsibility.
Her mother, a single parent, works selling popsicles in the streets of Antigua Guatemala to support her family. Some afternoons, Joselin and her sisters accompany her during work. Sometimes they help. Sometimes they wait. Sometimes homework happens between long days and busy streets.
Like many mothers, Joselin’s mom does everything she can for her children. But there is one challenge that has always worried her: she never had the opportunity to learn how to read or write herself, making it difficult to support Joselin academically at home.
And still, every morning, Joselin keeps showing up.
Learning has not always been easy for her. Reading and writing often require extra patience, practice, and time. Some activities take longer. Some words require more repetition. But what stands out most about Joselin is not what is difficult for her, it is how willing she is to keep trying.
She likes asking questions. Practicing. Trying again. “I want to keep studying because I want to do big things when I grow up.” – Joselyn, second grade.
What makes stories like Joselin’s powerful is not that challenges exist. It is what happens when students receive the support they need to continue.
