At Niños de Guatemala, the student government is one of the most anticipated activities for students. Each year, schools are filled with energy and excitement as students organize themselves to elect their representatives. At the “El Porvenir” school, José Ricardo, a 5th-grade student, was elected as school president by the majority of his classmates.
What is the student Government?
The student government election is a key event to foster leadership and active participation in decisions that impact the school community. Leading up to the election, recesses became campaign spaces, where participating parties used posters, music, and chants to encourage their peers to vote. The elections are not only a fun and spirited event but also an opportunity for young people to learn about civic responsibility.
José Ricardo stood out not only for his charisma and ability to rally support but also for his proposals. Among his ideas were improving the school’s sports facilities and helping elderly community members.
His main proposals included: Repainting the soccer field. Installing a new basketball hoop. Adding nets to the soccer goals.
After the election, José Ricardo and his team organized activities to raise funds. They sold ice cream, sodas, hot dogs, snacks, and corn. The funds allowed them to carry out their plans. With the help of their sponsor, they improved the sports facilities and renovated the soccer field.
José Ricardo’s sponsor plays a key role in his development. Sponsorship at Niños de Guatemala is more than financial. It creates strong bonds between the student and sponsor. Sponsors communicate through letters, calls, or video calls. The sponsor of José Ricardo was proud of his leadership. They supported his campaign, which made his proposals possible.
