Experience Guatemala Tours

Experience Guatemala tours
Few people who come to Guatemala get to see the way most Guatemalans live or have an opportunity to understand the reality of this beautiful yet complicated country. Our tours consist of visiting local, non-touristic towns where we provide education for children who otherwise would not have access to it. Before visiting the schools, we visit local workshops, which are examples of the important local industries in that town, to give you insight into the daily life of these families.
The Experience Guatemala Tour will let you see Guatemala for both its beauty and its struggles, with 100% of profits going directly to our schools. Click here if you are interested in participating in the tour or send an email to tour@ninosdeguatemala.org.

Chicken Bus Factory, Artisan Carpentry (Coffin Workshop) and NDG’s Primary School “Nuesto Futuro” and Secondary School “Básico” in Ciudad Vieja:

Here is an outline of a typical morning tour:

8.00am – 8.30am: We walk across Antigua from our office (4a Calle Oriente #28, Antigua, Guatemala) and we start off with a local chicken bus trip from Antigua to Ciudad Vieja (15 minutes, cost covered by tour fee). During the trip we talk about the history and community of Ciudad Vieja. It is a small city, a world away from Antigua.

8.30am – 9.30am: Our first stop is a chicken bus restoration factory, where local tradesmen convert school buses from the United States and Canada into the beautiful public buses that are seen all over Guatemala.

9.30am – 9.45am: We take a short walk through the neighborhood where many of our families live who send their children to school and talk about the socio-economic realities of the community and the difficulties they face.

9.45am – 10.30am: We visit our beautiful school, “Nuestro Futuro” where we learn about the education programme, the different projects we run, and how Niños de Guatemala is helping to break the cycle of poverty and empower the local community to achieve a better life. We enjoy a coffee or tea while we rest during the children’s break time.

10.30am – 11.00am: We visit a family-owned casket workshop, where we see how local artisans build, paint and decorate coffins. The local artisans explain about the industry and cultural traditions related to death in Guatemala.

11.00am – 11.15am: Our last stop is our secondary school “Básico” where we see our newest school and answer any questions from the tour.

11.15am – 11.30am: We take a local chicken bus from Ciudad Vieja to return to Antigua.
