BAJA VERAPAZ Y ZACAPA
BAJA VERAPAZ AND ZACAPA:
Come with us on our Xela, Zunil and Fuentes Georginas tour and discover beautiful nature and forests of Baja Verapaz and Zacapa. You’ll visit the two unique nature reserves Ranchitos de Quetzal and Finca Heloderma, see a sacred Mayan ceremonial site at the Cuevas de Chicoy, enjoy a unique mountainside eco-hotel, and maybe catch a sight of the elusive and beautiful Resplendent Quetzal!
Ranchitos del Quetzal
After a 4.5’s hour drive, you will reach Ranchitos de Quetzal, a self-sustainable private nature reserve, located in the heart of the Resplendent Quetzal’s habitat. After enjoying breakfast on site, we will begin our guided walking tour of part of Baja Verapaz’s cloud forest where will enjoy the beautiful nature of the forest and the Rio Colorado. On the tour, we will see flora and fauna typical of this area and, if lucky, catch a view of the quetzal, Guatemala’s elusive and ornate national bird.
Cuevas de Chicoy
Our next stop are the nearby Cuevas of Chicoy, sacred caves located within the cloud forest where Mayan ceremonies have been conducted since ancestral times (30 minutes’ drive). The cave offers impressive natural formations of stalagmites and stalactites as well as diverse natural altars where offerings and blessings are left for the gods.
Montaña Hotel el Olvido
We will finish our day at the Montaña Hotel el Olvido, an ecohotel in the mountains and our accommodation for the evening, where we will enjoy free time to take advantage of the area’s natural surroundings with an optional hike of the area.
After breakfast at the hotel and a 2 hour’s drive, we will reach Finca Heloderma, a nature reserve focused on the protection of the area’s dry forest habitat and the Heloderma, an endangered species of lizard. On a guided walking tour through the nature reserve, we will learn about these conservation efforts and the area’s flora and fauna. After a local lunch with members of the community, we will return to Antigua (6.5 hour’s drive).
We will depart for Antigua early the next day (4 hour’s drive), after enjoying breakfast at the hotel.
