At Niños de Guatemala, our volunteers become part of our family, and Alex is a perfect example of that. After years of working in schools in the United States, he switched to a career in sales to travel more. That’s how, in May of last year, he found NDG.
“My first trip was about eight weeks, but I think I may have only signed up with NDG for three. Now, in less than a year, I’ve traveled back to Guatemala three times. I hope to live here most of the year.”
Alex started volunteering as an English assistant with Ms. Manue, working with students from third to sixth grade. Over time, he got to know the teachers, staff, and students, and by his second trip, he felt like part of the community.
“When I talk about NDG, I often bring up how generous and kind the people are at the school. That generosity and welcoming spirit have personally impacted my life.”
For Alex, volunteering isn’t just about teaching—it’s about connection.
“I don’t think of myself as helping the children at the school, so much as us sharing parts of our lives together.”
